Menurut Federasi Kesehatan Mental Dunia (World Federation for Mental Health) menjelaskan pengertian dari kesehatan mental sebagai kondisi yang memungkinkan adanya perkembangan yang baik secara fisik, intelektual dan emosional, sepanjang hal itu sesuai dengan keadaan orang lain. Kesehatan mental yang baik memiliki kondisi batin yang berada dalam keadaan tentram, tenang dan positif, sehingga hal tersebut membuat seseorang untuk menikmati kehidupan sehari-hari dan menghargai orang lain di sekitar. Namun ketika sebaliknya ketika memiliki gangguan kesehatan mental maka akan menimbulkan dampak seperti: emosi selalu tinggi dan cepat marah dan mengalami sakit yang tidak dapat dijelaskan Ketika seseorang merasakan dan mengalami :
1. Kurang atau terlalu banyak makan dan tidur
2. Kurang berenergi (tidak berdaya)
3. Sangat sedih, bingung, gelisah, dan takut tanpa alasan yang jelas
4. Mendengar suara atau meyakini hal yang tidak ada dan tidak nyata
5. Tidak mampu melakukan pekerjaan sehari-hari yang seharusnya dapat dilakukan dengan mudah , seperti mandi, menyisir rambut, merawat tubuh.
Kita dapat men-support mereka dengan memberikan bantuan berupa mendengar apa yang mereka katakan dengan baik, atau mengajak mereka untuk pergi ke fasilitas kesehatan terdekat seperti puskesmas atau klinik yang menyediakan jasa psikolog atau psikiater.
